We’re thrilled to share the second episode of UTR presents Trash Recital Season 2 — starring Lawrence Arabia, produced by Sports Team and made with support from NZ On Air!

For each episode of Trash Recital we’ve invited some of our favourite Aotearoa artists into the UTR studios to perform one of their signature songs, re-created using everyday items selected from Sports Team‘s stockpile of recycled junk. Trash Recital not only provides a launchpad for stunning reimaginings of recent classic tunes, but also the perfect opportunity for a chinwag with our local musical heroes.

Our new episode stars Silver Scroll winner Lawrence Arabia aka James Milne, reinventing ‘The Beautiful Young Crew‘ from his recently reissued classic 2010 album Chant Darling. Half of the Chabs & Milky audio-visual dynamic duo and one third of new motorik super-trio Half Hexagon, with Yolanda Fagan (Na Noise) and Julien Dyne, Milne spoke candidly with Sports Team about the tune’s origins and his own songwriting journey, whilst creating musical gold using objects from our famous wall of garbage.

/ Wednesday 11th May, 2022 8:53AM

We’re over the moon to share the first episode of UTR presents Trash Recital Season 2 — starring Troy Kingi and created by Sports Team!

Releasing online fortnightly from today onwards, our 2022 season of Trash Recital features even more stars from throughout Aotearoa’s diverse music community, reimagining their songs using objects from Sports Team‘s expertly curated collection of recycled junk. Viewers can enjoy an even trashier set than last year, a dazzling new claymation opening sequence by Annabel Kean (finalist for the 2022 Outstanding Music Journalism Award), and more outstanding banter throughout the new ten episode series, made with support from NZ On Air.

For each episode of Trash Recital we’ve invited some of our favourite Aotearoa artists into the UTR studios to perform one of their signature songs, re-created using everyday items selected from Sports Team’s stockpile of trash. Trash Recital not only provides a launchpad for stunning reimaginings of recent classic tunes, but also the perfect opportunity for a chinwag with our local musical heroes.

Our first episode stars Silver Scroll winner Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui), reinventing his song ‘Shake That Skinny Ass‘ from 2020’s The Ghost of Freddie Cesar with trusty "fix it man" The Amazon Forest (Forrest Thorp). Touring his 2021 album Black Sea Golden Ladder with Delaney Davidson nationwide in August, Kingi chatted candidly with Sports Team about his famously ambitious 10 10 10 project (ten albums, ten genres, ten years) while transforming trash into musical treasure.

Nary a week goes by without another thrilling release from the Sports Team camp, with Valentine’s Day bringing a tidy EP of romantic renditions foisted upon the world by co-founder Callum Devlin (Hans Pucket, Dateline, bFM Top Ten) and visual artist / writer Jo Bragg. Creators of 2015’s Christmas themed collection jordana bragg and callum devlin sing, the Tāmaki-based DIY duo got the band back together Blues Brothers style to rattle off "earnest covers" of heart melting tunes originally made famous by Carson & Gaile, Phil Phillips, the Bee Gees, and Tommy James & the Shondells. Tuck into jo bragg and callum devlin sing II below, and don’t miss Devlin performing new songs across the country with Hans Pucket on their Confidently Test Out New Material nationwide tour in April…

The Beths Drop New Track A Real Thing Video

Annabel Kean / Photo credit: Frances Carter / Thursday 10th February, 2022 11:00AM

Having just embarked on their month long North America tour (which you can keep up with here), Tāmaki’s pride and joy The Beths unveil killer new track ‘A Real Thing’ along with a hectic Handycam video. The high energy bop is the first new music we’ve heard from the awesome foursome since their Aotearoa Music Award-winning sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers dropped mid 2020. Described by The Beths front person Elizabeth Stokes as "a kind of anxiety dream" and "a bit muddled, a bit frantic, a bit sinister", ‘A Real Thing’ is overflowing with all the soaring harmonies and life-affirming guitar perfection we’ve grown to expect from Stokes and bandmates Jonathan Pearce, Ben Sinclair and Tristan Deck. To add to the excitement, The Beths also announce their signing to Ivy League Records, who will be taking the band under their wing for all things Australia and New Zealand adjacent. Enjoy your first listen of many with the Sports Team-created (yours truly) and NZ On Air-supported clip for ‘A Real Thing’ below…

DARTZ Unleash Road Trip Video For Toyota Corolla

Chris Cudby / Photo credit: Vanessa Cone
/ Thursday 20th January, 2022 12:17PM

Fresh from tearing it up at Valhalla last night, the DARTZ lads will be cramming into their famed customised Toyota Corolla for the epic drive from their Wellington hometown to Hamilton ‘City Of The Future’ to play Friday’s Waikato leg of their ongoing summer tour. True road dogs, they’ll be bouncing from the Tron for a headline gig at Tāmaki’s Whammy Bar on Saturday, playing all about the South Island next week then returning to the super city on the 29th for The Others Way mega-festival. Giving us all a taste of what to look forward to, DARTZ have unleashed brand spanking new visuals for their beloved car’s titular pop-punk tune, collaged together from on-the-road footage by Sports Team and made with support from NZ On Air.

Following the grandest of Kiwi music video traditions, ‘Toyota Corolla‘ documents Danz, Crispy, Rollyz and Clark Mathews driving all around Aotearoa on tour, spruced up with some incendiary embellishments including a cute mini-version of their car busting through a billboard. You’ll feel the band’s pain as the DARTZ-mobile catches fire near Queenstown (extinguished with beer?) and gasp at the majestic concluding bungy jump — smash that play button below…

"This video is a love story: not just between DARTZ and [their car] Candice, not just between DARTZ and the beautiful country of Aotearoa, but also between the DARTZ boys themselves. That’s one of our main goals in everything we do: to try capture and share with the world the story of the ever-deepening friendship and love between Crispy, Rollyz, Clark and myself. Whether we’re drinking beers on a sunny day in Wellington City, killing it on stage, or crammed into a tiny death machine hurtling over the Crown Range with smoke billowing from our tires, that love will always come through.” – Danz

Watch Hans Puckets Video For I Dont Know What To Get You For Christmas

Christmas Cudby / Photo credit: Samuel Austin
/ Tuesday 21st December, 2021 10:27AM

The cherry on top of Hans Pucket‘s recent festive double single drop, an uplifting video for of ‘I Don’t Know What To Get You For Christmas (Do I Really Love You?)‘ directed by Samuel Austin and produced by Sports Team has been unleashed just before Santa clambers down our collective chimneys. Hans Pucket frontman Oliver Devlin strolls the unmistakably winding pathways of Pōneke’s central suburbs whilst singing his heartfelt carol, experiences an unseasonable sprinkling of snowflakes at the beach, then cheerfully sets sail towards an uncertain future in the cannily constructed two-shot clip.

A 7" lathe cut disc also featuring boozy B-side ‘Drink With My Friends’ is available for preorder direct from the source HERE, as the initial pressing has already sold out. Enjoy the new video below and count the days until Hans Pucket tour Aotearoa with special guests in April 2022…

“We tried to film this all in one shot, so in a way this is Hans Pucket’s 1917." — Oliver Devlin

"Hans Pucket are such a pleasure to work with — between Oli, Callum and the rest of the band I’m always amazed at their willingness to go with any of my silly ideas — especially when those ideas involve potentially making a snowy mess in a public place without permission. And especially when those ideas demand performances you’d expect from actors! They always give me their best and I try to give my best back to them :)" — Samuel Austin

Hans Pucket Unveil Xmas Single Drink With My Friends Announce Tour Supports

Chris ‘Krampus’ Cudby
/ Friday 17th December, 2021 10:54AM

What does Christmas mean for you? For some it can be a lonesome time of solitary evenings watching late night TV screenings of Bad Santa and / or unavoidable family feuds, for others a pious religious occasion, but for Hans Pucket it’s an opportunity to get frisky and enjoy a well-deserved ‘Drink With My Friends‘ after a crazy year. Calling both Tāmaki Makaurau and Pōneke their homes, twin brothers Oli and Callum Devlin (Sports Team, Dateline), Jono Nott (ONONO) and Callum Passells follow one of the most earnest local Xmas tunes in recent memory with a party poppin’ ode to letting your hair down and reflecting on what the future might bring — keeping it upbeat with zig-zagging bass, punch-spiking guitar and boozy hangover-predicting keys.

The new song and last week’s ‘I Don’t Know What To Get You For Christmas (Do I Really Love You?)‘ have been squeezed onto strictly limited edition 7" lathe cut disc (including a risograph printed cover with a handwritten lyric sheet on the inside) that’ll be an ideal stocking stuffer for a loved one. Touring all about Aotearoa in April with a sack full of new tunes on their Confidently Test Out New Material tour, Hans Pucket have announced supports for their five date sonic adventure. Listen to both festive numbers and grip the updated details below…

Hans Pucket Share Xmas Single I Dont Know What To Get You For Christmas

Chris ‘Kringle’ Cudby
/ Friday 10th December, 2021 8:59AM

Because you’ve all been on your best behaviour this year (or even if you haven’t), Aotearoa fab foursome Hans Pucket are back giving the gift of catchy tunes this festival season. Touring nationwide in April, the team of twin brothers Oli and Callum Devlin (Sports Team, Dateline), Jono Nott (aka ONONO) and Callum Passells unwrap the first of two Christmasy goodies for 2021 with ‘I Don’t Know What To Get You For Christmas (Do I Really Love You?)‘ — the band’s first official new song since their self-released debut album Eczema dropped like an atom bomb back in 2018. A tender reflection on our capitalist stocking-stuffing tradition served up with a big dollop of relationship anxiety, the ballad sports some particularly rousing sax and heart-melting harmonies, whilst pondering that most perplexing of puzzles orbiting the summer holiday period [if anyone reading is wondering: I could use some new socks].

Lucky Pōneke punters can head along to San Fran tonight to catch a necessarily stripped back version of Hans Pucket, featuring frontman Oli Devlin as part of the all-star Eyegum Presents: End Of Year? Fuck Yeah! event (Tāmaki’s borders don’t reopen until 15th December). Available for pre-order on limited 7" lathe cut disc (including a risograph printed cover with a handwritten lyric sheet on the inside) and backed with soon to be released B-side ‘Drink With My Friends‘, Oli Devlin opened up about how the new single was written and recorded despite ongoing lockdown challenges in NZ…

“I made a lockdown challenge to myself last year to try and write some honest Christmas songs that weren’t crap. These are the first two from that batch. It was thrilling hearing everyone’s additions come in – each of us writing and recording our parts from our homes. Also celebrating our first release with Callum Passells who makes some stunning sax, synth and clarinet contributions!”

Chris Cudby
/ Thursday 2nd December, 2021 12:44PM

As Christmas draws near in Aotearoa, the question on the lips of many local gig-goers has been: "When are Hans Pucket going to announce new dates for their Confidently Test Out New Material national tour?" That joyous moment has arrived, as twin brothers Oli and Callum Devlin (Sports Team, Dateline), Jono Nott (aka ONONO) and sax / keyboard guru Callum Passells have revealed they’ll now be touring in April 2022, when hopefully all of this year’s hodgepodge of weirdness will seem like some kind of bizarre folk tale. We’re still to get word of support artists, plus the band have hinted at forthcoming special festive bonus treat for fans. Rest assured we’ll keep you in the loop, don’t miss Hans Pucket at the dates below, including a brand new headline gig at Ōtepoti’s Dive and shift in location in Tāmaki Makaurau to the larger capacity Whammy Bar — all tickets remain valid and UTR ticket holders have been emailed direct with details (check your promotions and spam folders)

"We’re so lucky to get to do this, can’t wait to get out and see some friends and have a boogie!" – Oliver Devlin

The event will operate under both Red and Orange traffic light settings, the latter would allow more than 100 attendees (we’ll find out which on 13th December), plus vaccine passports will be required. The Beths Unveil Live Album Film Auckland New Zealand 2020

Chris Cudby
/ Friday 17th September, 2021 8:02AM

Arising from humble beginnings playing Tāmaki Makaurau subterranean dive bars to achieving fame on a global scale, The Beths share today a new album and concert film documenting a key moment in their already fabled career. The team of Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce, Benjamin Sinclair and Tristan Deck‘s live record Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 captures the energy of The Beths’ landmark headline event at Auckland Town Hall last November, triumphing over last year’s lockdown dramas to treat local fans to one heck of a show in the iconic venue. You can feel the emotion in the air as Stokes sings big-hearted anthem after anthem and hear the crowd squealing with delight as Pearce lets rip with Thin Lizzy-esque guitar shreds — like a career-spanning, sixteen track retrospective from a veteran band that are somehow only two albums deep.

You can enjoy the stream of the live album right now, then scoot along to the band’s YouTube channel or Vimeo from 4PM NZT today to enjoy the concert film of Auckland, New Zealand, 2020, created by longtime collaborators Sports Team — who also worked with The Beths in making this week’s magical seasonal finale of UTR Trash Recital. The Beths are hosting a Watch Party on their Patreon this Saturday 18th September from 11AM NZT, giving supporters the neat opportunity to watch the film in real time with the band.

The new release comes along with the happy / unhappy news The Beths’ forthcoming multi-night residency at Tāmaki’s Whammy Bar is still going ahead, but has been postponed with new dates to be announced. Now unable to journey to Aotearoa for the shows, Australian songwriter Stella Donnelly says: "I’m very sorry that I can no longer take part in these amazing shows with The Beths, and my own show at Meow. It was something I was very much looking forward to and hope we get to make it happen sometime in the future.” New dates and support info will be revealed by the organisers soon — ticket holders will be emailed direct from UTR [check your promotions, spam and junk folders].

‘Auckland, New Zealand, 2020’ is out now digitally via Carpark Records, the release of the vinyl LP edition has been postponed until Friday 1st October due to Level 4 restrictions.

The Beths Perform Im Not Getting Excited UTR Trash Recital Episode 11

Sports Team / A.K. / Wednesday 15th September, 2021 12:05PM

We’re stoked to share the eleventh episode and season finale of our new web series, created in collaboration with the talented gang at Sports Team: UTR Trash Recital!

For each episode of Trash Recital we’ve invited some of our favourite Aotearoa artists into the UTR studios to perform one of their signature songs, re-created using everyday items selected from a treasure trove of literal trash, collected by Sports Team from Tāmaki Makaurau’s finest op shops / second hand stores. Trash Recital not only provides a launchpad for stunning reimaginings of recent classic tunes, but also the perfect opportunity for a chinwag with our local musical heroes.

Aotearoa’s The Beths are the final stars / victims of Trash Recital season one, and the loveable, huggable crew of Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce, Benjamin Sinclair and Tristan Deck hit it for six. It’s the start of a massive seven or so months for the multi-award winning Tāmaki four piece, who are launching their Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 live album this Friday, have a bunch of local shows up their sleeves and a North America / EU tour in their sights for January onwards. Before they were too swept up with all of that, Sports Team dragged them onto the Trash Recital set for a one-of-a-kind recreation of their ripper track ‘I’m Not Getting Excited’ from their latest album Jump Rope Gazers. Watch as The Beths build makeshift instruments and fart machines in the final episode of Trash Recital season one…

A thank you

The process of building Trash Recital from a humble dust bunny to a big, stinking pile, eleven episodes high, has been an absolute joy. Thank you to Undertheradar for giving Sports Team this opportunity and trusting us with this project. Chris Cudby and Daryl Fincham gave us total creative freedom to make a video series from scratch, and have gone full tilt to support Trash Recital, giving it so much time and nurturing to fulfil its potential. I’d also like to thank the mega talented Ruby Walsh for taking on her role as audio engineer with excitement and a much needed open mind. Ruby has been our Trash Recital secret weapon, and is the person who actually proved it could be done and that we hadn’t just thought up some total dud. Ruby is the Sports Team 2021 MVP. Thanks to NZ On Air for all your support and for being our number one fans. Thank you to all the artists that let us film them enduring this special new type of torture specifically catered to musicians. Thank you to those who watched, shared and enjoyed.

Much love,

Hans Pucket Announce Nationwide Tour of Aotearoa

Chris Cudby
/ Friday 13th August, 2021 8:30AM

Hans Pucket have morphed into a bit of a "supergroup" since launching their immensely popular debut album Eczema back in 2018. Drummer Jono Nott released the fab first long player from his electronic pop project ONONO just last month, bassist Callum Devlin (also of Dateline) thrilled the world with his Loud Cooking web show exploits and as one half of video production whiz kids Sports Team, and the band welcomed on board sax / keyboard guru Callum Passells. It’s been a while between tours however, and singer / guitarist Oli Devlin (twin brother of Callum Devlin) and the gang are righting that wrong with today’s announcement of a Hans Pucket four date tour of Aotearoa, hitting a venue near you this October.

Fans who’ve been hanging out for new Hans Pucket songs will be richly rewarded with the knowledge this will be their ‘Confidently Test Out New Material’ tour. They promise: "There will be music from their upcoming album; there will be cool new merch; there will be a moment in the set where Jono plays a guitar solo and everyone claps; Oli will forget some lyrics and try to ask Callum Devlin what they are mid-song."

"We’re so lucky to get to do this, can’t wait to get out and see some friends and have a boogie!" — Oli Devlin

"It’s exciting. I can’t believe it’s been almost two years since we last ‘hit the road’. We’ve really levelled up as a band since Callum [Passells] joined, so I can anticipate some minds being blown, to be quite honest." — Callum Devlin

UnderTheRadar are thrilled to present…

Press release:

The shows promise all the wonders of Hans Pucket’s four-piece lineup. Callum Passells will bring his saxophone and keyboard wizardry to the group. There will be music from their upcoming album; there will be cool new merch; there will be a moment in the set where Jono plays a guitar solo and everyone claps; Oli will forget some lyrics and try to ask Callum Devlin what they are mid-song. They aren’t pushing the boat out too far for this one, they’re just getting back out there and playing their thrilling live set, to a good, keen crowd.

The globally celebrated gang of Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce, Benjamin Sinclair and Tristan Deck of have also thrilled fans with the announcement a new live album and concert film documenting their landmark 2020 Auckland Town Hall headline event — releasing on 17th September via US imprint Carpark Records and adeptly filmed by Sports Team (who also do amazing work creating UTR Trash Recital). Revving up for live appearances at Tauranga Arts Festival, Labour of Love, Nelson Arts Festival and Outerfields, The Beths now have a full scale tour of Te Ika a Maui on their hands. Stokes enthused about the flood of memories prompted by the Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 concert film…

We’re stoked to share the fifth episode of our new web series created in collaboration with the talented gang at Sports Team: UTR Trash Recital!

Marking the halfway point of season one in style, we invited Pōneke rising stars DARTZ into our inner city office to reimagine their summer smash hit ‘High At The Beach‘. An absolutely storming presence live on stage, the team of Danz, Crispy, Rollyz and Clark Mathews will be bringing the party at Tāmaki’s all-star Deep Dive 2021 festival on 10th July. They revealed the controversial secret origin of their anthem as they created a brand new version of ‘High At The Beach’ using measuring cups, cardboard tubes, a gravy bucket, our very popular rubber chicken and more. Shepherds Reign Perform Le Manu UTR Trash Recital Episode 4

Sports Team / C.C.
/ Thursday 17th June, 2021 10:17AM

We’re stoked to share the fourth episode of our new web series created in collaboration with the talented gang at Sports Team: UTR Trash Recital!

We’ve been looking forward to this one — for our fourth episode we invited South Auckland’s Shepherds Reign to work their Polynesian metal magic using our UTR office trash pile. The team of Filiva’a James (Ngāti Hāmoa), Gideon Voon (Ngāti Hainamana), Joseph Oti-George (Ngāpuhi), Shaymen Rameka (Ngāi te Rangi, Te Arawa), and Oliver Leupolu (Ngāti Hāmoa) treated us to a pulse-pounding reinvention of their latest single ‘Le Manu‘ — meaning "The Beast" in Samoan (not be to be confused with the extinct Manu bird, as they point out in the vid below). Experience Shepherds Reign’s literally metallic new take on the song below along with a first-hand history of the group and don’t miss them tearing up the stage at Whammy Bar on 22nd July, supported by Coridian and Just One Fix. Be sure to keep it locked for Trash Recital Episode 5, dropping in just two weeks time…

Dateline Share Single Video Dumb For My Age

Chris Cudby / Photo Credit: Mason Fairey
/ Thursday 10th June, 2021 1:36PM

Making a splash whenever they release fresh tunes, Dateline have unleashed a new audio-visual combo, teasing the 2022 launch of their forthcoming debut album. Helmed by Heretaunga (Hastings) based songwriter Katie Everingham and currently including Tāmaki Makaurau all stars Callum Devlin (Hans Pucket), Priya Sami (Bub) and Ruby Walsh (Lips), Dateline’s very catchy ‘Dumb For My Age‘ tackles the anxieties involved in striving to act your age (not an issue for me personally, as I type this wearing a huge cartoony Snoopy jersey). Everingham rocks a fab array of outfits in Sports Team‘s ace new video, created with the support of NZ On Air, navigating the sometimes stressful terrain of the super city’s upwardly mobile suburban hotspots and irritated by tiny lil members of Dateline popping up all over the place.

You don’t want to miss Dateline busting loose life-sized at Festival Of Sunreturn this Saturday (check out the timetable HERE), supporting Wax Chattels at Pōneke’s San Fran next weekend, and playing single release shows in Everingham’s hometown and Tāmaki — details below.

"Dumb For My Age is about trying to be an adult and trying to go about things the right way but feeling like a bit of a kid and an imposter underneath it all." – Katie Everingham

The Chills Perform Kaleidoscope World UTR Trash Recital Episode 3

Sports Team / C.C.
/ Thursday 3rd June, 2021 10:04AM

We’re stoked to share the third episode of our new web series created in collaboration with the talented gang at Sports Team: UTR Trash Recital!

As subtly hinted last time, our third episode stars none other than Dunedin legend Martin Phillipps and the full current lineup of The Chills! They’ve just concluded a nationwide tour celebrating the release of their internationally acclaimed seventh album Scatterbrain. The Chills gang of Phillipps, Todd Knudson, Erica Scally, Oli Wilson and Callum Hampton squeezed in behind the Trash Recital desk to treat us to a brand new version of their hands down classic ‘Kaleidoscope World‘, played using such everyday items as a hair dryer and an egg slice, and chatted about the origins of the iconic song. Enjoy episode number three right here and stay glued to your seat for episode four in a fortnight’s time…

Lips Share Single Video Your Deodorant Doesnt Work

Chris Cudby / Photo credit: Lula Cucchiara
/ Wednesday 26th May, 2021 9:25AM

Recipients of the 2012 Silver Scroll for the dreamy ‘Everything To Me‘, the multitalented Lips gang fronted by Stephanie Brown and Fen Ikner have dropped a jagged lil pop pill in the form of new single ‘Your Deodorant Doesn’t Work’. Served up with a stylishly creepy video from the ever-productive Sports Team crew and created with the support of NZ On Air, body odour issues are merely the tip of the iceberg in Lips’ spiky and jubilant jam. The song tells the story of "someone entering into a misjudged affair, immediately and inelegantly backing out, and later wondering how other people might have handled themselves and the situation more expertly," with snarling lines like "no I haven’t heard of your band" sure to hit hard for some listeners. Sports Team’s surprisingly violent visuals are like a stage magician’s nightmare, seemingly drawing upon the lurid, blood-drenched cinematic tradition of Italian Giallo horror and concluding with an impish, razor sharp twist. Enjoy the wild ride of ‘Your Deodorant Doesn’t Work’ and look forward to Lips’ long awaited debut album I Don’t Know Why I Do Anything, featuring new bandmates Ruby Walsh and Maude Morris, launching on 16th July…

Anthonie Tonnon Unveils Video For Entertainment Announces New Album

Chris Cudby / Image credit: Belinda Merrie and Daniel Blackball Alexander / Friday 9th April, 2021 10:41AM

Whanganui-based songwriter, activist and historian Anthonie Tonnon has revealed he’s got a lot up his sleeve for 2021. The ever-dapper artist has shared today a video for his new single ‘Entertainment‘, an enchanting glimpse of his forthcoming third studio album Leave Love Out Of This, set to launch in Aotearoa this coming July via regular tour mate Nadia Reid‘s own imprint Slow Time Records. Tackling as his topic the mixed up world of showbiz, Tonnon literally makes sparks fly in the new clip, created by the indefatigable Sports Team crew with support from NZ On Air.

Reflecting on the dreams, compromises and competitiveness involved in navigating our music industry’s infamously sometimes treacherous terrain (not unlike a poetic take on Dan Melchior’s scabrous ‘Blank Magic‘), Tonnon is unsparing in his critique yet somehow emerges with his dignity intact. Looking like a vision on a CRT screen, Tonnon keeps his cool in the eye of the storm, riding the synthetic waves of his trusty homegrown Deluge in the clip’s uplifting closing passage. Available for preorder now, Leave Love Out Of This was produced by Tonnon’s longtime collaborator, The Beths guitarist and producer Jonathan Pearce, who pops up in the video along with an appearance from a/v genius Lady Lazer Light, who has been working with Tonnon on tour…

‘Leave Love Out Of This’ will be released on Friday 16th July via Slow Time Records (UK/EU/NZ), Misra Records (North America), and Flippin Yeah Records (AUS).

Merk Announces Infinite Youth Album Tour Shares Single Video Deep Dive

Chris Cudby
/ Thursday 18th March, 2021 7:04AM

The stars sure are aligning for Aotearoa’s mercurial indie-pop talent Merk, the songwriting nom de plume of Mark Perkins. Following a run of gemlike singles that attracted attention from the likes of SPIN, BBC Radio 6 and Clash, he’ll be unleashing his second studio album Infinite Youth to the delight of fans across the globe, the keenly awaited sequel to 2016’s Auckland Live Best Independent Debut winning Swordfish. Launching in early April, Merk is celebrating the record’s release with his first ever headline tour, taking over venues across the nation with full band this coming May, following on from this month’s online performance for SXSW Digital.

That’s not all Merk’s got up his wizard-like sleeve for today. You’ll certainly flip out about his brand new single / video double-punch ‘Deep Dive’, the fourth tune unveiled from Infinite Youth, along with a brunch-tastic video directed by the champs at Sports Team for you to feast your eyes on, created with the support of NZ On Air. Channeling the sublime melodic visions of 20th Century Japanese City Pop into his latest release, Merk explained the literally dreamy origins of ‘Deep Dive’…

“A portion of this song came to me in a dream one night, I woke up and went to the piano and recorded the demo. For that reason, it feels very surreal and separate to me. It’s one of the more pop moments on the album, a song that carries you the whole way through without changing too much. It reminds me a lot of our 80s Japanese city pop references as well as a New York New-Wave sound.

Sometimes I DJ at weddings under the name DJ Ragù and wear a chef’s hat to help bring a good vibe. I think I made an offhand reference to this weird character I perform under to Sports Team when we were hanging out once, which they must’ve remembered because when I asked them to make a video with me for Deep Dive this is the concept they came back with: A rooftop pancake party where I’m performing like a DJ but instead of flipping records, I’m flipping cakes, baby. So, we invited a bunch of people over to my house in Auckland, went up to the rooftop and chaos ensued!”

Undertheradar proudly presents…

Merk ‘Infinite Youth’ Album Tour

Saturday 1st May – Jam Factory, Tauranga

Saturday 15th May – Cassette 9, Auckland

Thursday 20th May – Meow, Wellington

Saturday 22nd May – The Loons, Christchurch

Sunday 23rd May – Dive, Dunedin

Tickets available via UTR from 9am, Monday 22nd March

Press release:

To celebrate the release of his sophomore album Infinite Youth – out Fri 9 April via Humblebrag Records, Merk is heading out on his first ever national headline tour. Presented by 100% Good, 95bFM, Undertheradar, Merk with full band will play five dates across Aotearoa in May. Beginning in Tauranga and taking in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch the tour wraps up in Dunedin and will be fans first chance to hear songs from the new album performed live. Tickets for all shows go on sale 9am Monday 22 March.

A full 11 tracks, Infinite Youth examines the blurry line between adolescence and adulthood, and all the clarity and mess that comes with it. This is a record that thrives on a certain simplicity of rhythm, melody, and lyric, and is compelled by contrast: pop songs influenced by art music, an album about adulthood that reflects heavily on what it is to be young, and a sonic world that is both expansive and deeply intimate.

Weekly Roundup Friday 15th January

Chris Cudby / Image: Na Noise / Friday 15th January, 2021 1:59PM

We’re stoked to be back in the UTR saddle after a few leisurely days of soaking up summer rays, sampling Aotearoa’s festival season, and staring aghast at the orange-faced political madness unfolding overseas. We hope you’ve had a chance to take it easy after an absolutely hectic and at times frankly quite stressful 2020 — a huge shoutout to everybody who have been working hard at day jobs over the past month.

We have a bunch of super cool projects ready to reveal for 2021 (hint: involving video pros Sports Team) that we’ll be telling you all about very soon, but in the meantime let’s have a look at what’s happening right now gigs-wise. As it’s still a tentative state of affairs regarding the global pandemic raging outside Aotearoa’s borders, we sincerely encourage you to do your bit to help our live scene keep thriving. Don’t be a ding-dong who couldn’t be arsed, it really is as easy as scanning the Covid tracer app (download it here), getting into the habit of using it every time, and masking up when appropriate.

Announcement highlights for the last few weeks (a traditionally quiet news period) included: Pōneke dream-fuzz crew Transistor announced their their biggest tour yet, kicking off this weekend in Tāmaki Makaurau and Ōtepoti, Mermaidens announced their very own Mermgrown festival will be happening in Pōneke this February, party punks DARTZ are celebrating the success of their chart-topping banger ‘High At The Beach’ with a whirlwind run of national summer tour dates, Chelsea Jade is escaping the US and touring Aotearoa in February, March and April, Pōneke bedroom-pop foursome Macho Macho are gearing up for a glistening summer tour, and Tāmaki Makaurau via Lancashire songwriter Tim Allen (no relation) and bandmates The Two are celebrating the launch of their forthcoming single ‘Love Is A Pill’ with an extensive national tour in March, April and May. That’s by no means all — Aotearoa’s premier celebration of punk rock and ska Punk It Up V revealed a refreshed lineup of all-local legends due to ongoing Covid restrictions, K M T P‘s big-hearted debut collection P.S. C U Soon receives a long-awaited celebratory launch event at Tāmaki Makaurau’s The Wine Cellar in mid-February, and the first annual Naked Whammy Fest was announced, featuring Voom, Echo Ohs, Amamelia, Phoebe Rings, Alexa Casino, Leaping Tiger, Hospital Sports and Party Dad at Whammy Bar and Whammy Backroom, absolutely free (!) on 30th January.

Jed Parsons Reveals Single Video Sad Together

Looking particularly swish in cream turtleneck and crisp grey blazer, who couldn’t love Jed Parsons as he croons away the days in the clip for his tender new ballad ‘Sad Together‘? Pining for the good times long passed as he roams Ōtautahi’s lonely streets, the rugged Canterbury countryside and even scales the Port Hills in a lovestruck daze, Parsons thankfully realises it’s time to move on by the conclusion of Sports Team‘s stylish clip, co-starring Annabel Kean (aka assistant editor of this site) and Callum Devlin (Hans Pucket, Dateline). While I’m tempted to say "we’ve all been there at some point", I doubt many readers have plumbed quite the unthinkable depths considered in the video for ‘Sad Together’, a tantalising teaser for Parsons’ forthcoming ten track sophomore album…

‘Sad Together’ is out now via major streaming services.

The Beths Unveil Video For Mars The God Of War

The Beths have revealed an action-packed suspense / spy thriller set amongst the constantly "under construction" rubble of 2020 Tāmaki Makaurau, for their zippy Jump Rope Gazers track ‘Mars, The God Of War‘. Directed by Sports Team (who seem to have a new video out every other week at the moment) and created with the support of NZ On Air, Liz Stokes, Jonathan Pearce and the gang look supremely stylish in the edge-of-your seat clip, making plans in derelict office spaces, pulling the ol’ switcheroo and giving chase in pursuit of mysterious cargo. My favourite bit is probably where bassist Ben Sinclair emerges from the Hauraki Gulf in scuba outfit and changes into a full James Bond-like suit with bow tie. Stokes lifted the lid on the making of the visuals for ‘Mars, The God Of War’ and their forthcoming all ages headline event at Auckland Town Hall with Disciple Pati and Mermaidens

"We spent one frantic day trying to exhaust every gag we could. Tristan and Callum constructed a hood-mounted camera rig for the getaway car, Jon snuck into a server room for a ‘hacking’ shot, Ben lost a deep-sea diving flipper to the Ponsonby Wharf, and Annabel found a real-live pigeon for me to release from the rooftops of Karangahape Road.

It’s been incredibly great playing this song out on tour and hearing people singing along. We can’t wait to play it nice n loud at the Auckland Town Hall on Nov 6th. ?

And if you can’t make it to that show in person… then Surprise no. 2 will be great news for you…"

‘Jump Rope Gazers’ is out now on vinyl LP, CD and digitally via Carpark Records.
